Test resultaten ObsIdentify-NIA (deel 6)

| Gezichten zijn leuk om met beeldherkennings software ObsIdentify te testen omdat ze altijd verrassende resultaten opleveren. Dit komt omdat ObsIdentify niet met gezichten is getraind. Hij kent de menselijke soort niet. De identificaties van gezichten zijn dan ook altijd fout: een Schotse Hooglander, een nijlpaard, een kip of een ringslang. De leukste zijn 100% zekerheid een foute identificatie. ObsIdentify snapt dus niet wat hij ziet. Maar er is wel verbetering zichtbaar. Vele gezichten die in 2021 90% of hoger scoorden, scoorden in 2022 vaak lager dan 30% en bovendien een andere soort. ObsIdentify heeft kennelijk eind 2021 grote wijzigingen ondergaan. In 2023 heeft zich deze trend verder doorgezet. Een gezicht wordt niet (nooit?) meer met 100% zekerheid als een dier geïdentificeerd. Waarschijnlijk komt dit omdat hij beter is geworden in het herkennen van een groter aantal dieren. |

Hieronder alleen voltreffers in 2022, dus foute identificatie's met 90% tot 100% zekerheid. De Schotse Hooglander heeft verreweg de meeste hits. Dat is ook wel enigszins verklaarbaar, het zal door de overeenkomstige haarkleur komen.

Foto's die hoger dan 90,0% scoren zijn relatief makkelijk naar een hogere score te brengen. Daaronder is het een stuk lastiger. Door randen afsnijden, de foto iets donkerder, iets groener te maken stijgt het succes percentage van 93,5% naar 100%

Andere routes naar 100% zijn mogelijk omdat er zoveel verschillend gekleurde Hooglanders zijn. Een jaar later zorgen die subtiele wijzigingen voor drastische verschillen! Het valt op dat de vogelsoorten minder algemeen of zeldzaam zijn.

This is good example of the strong effect of cropping the picture.
ObsIdentify is highly sensitive for croppings of a few pixels. The images themselves are not modified.
It appears that cropping to 900x900 delivers the maximum percentage.

Het rand effect
Het drastische en onbegrijpelijke effect van het afsnijden van kleine randen van een plaatje op de identificatie:

Dus het afsnijden van een rand van 6 x 14 pixels levert een verhoging van 36% naar 50%! Ik heb het eerder gezien, en het is dus nog steeds niet verdwenen.
Waarom heeft ObsIdentify daar in de praktijk (echte plaatjes) geen last van?
